Remarks about FINLAND and the
SOG competition
Explanation of why we did not arrange SOG:
1. We noticed in the very beginning of the
project that the need was to organize short and extremely basic courses for
seniors, who never before touched a computer. Our society provides the citizens
with many types of ICT-training, but very old seniors do not attend them for
two reasons: because of health they do not want to take longer obligations and
because the speed of teaching is too fast for them. This is why we organized
one day courses (4 hours). It was possible to proceed or take the same again.
Some of our participants only learned to use programs like Word, some came so
many times that they were able to use internet.
2. Even the idea of competition was a little non-Finnish. You know that our
excellent results in schools are based among other factors on non-competition.
We encouraged our seniors to come to as many courses as possible by saying that
everyone is "a winner" (because she/he has won the fear that she is
not able to learn something new). Each time they got a lot and one of the
winners had the lot which gave her the possibility to participate in the final
seminar.
