Introduction of different activities(task number 3)

It is a practical guide for partner organizations and for other adult education institutions to see possibilities of teaching in this filed.

Poland

Poland

Concerning the project, the activities are senior oriented : it is a School of @ctive Senior – S@S , which  the major goal is to stimulate and foster the activity of senior citizens and to  provide conditions for their integration and (self-) fulfillment.

Modulus of the S@S(“ Programme Lines”):

  1. ‘Senior in the world of culture and art’
  2. ‘Senior in the world of new technologies and information society
  3. ‘Senior in public life: towards conscious and full citizenship’

Ad.1

Major goals:

  • To provide conditions in which senior citizens may exhibit creativity and improve knowledge in the field of culture as well as enhance activity, develop and extend interest (through using ICT, too)
  • To support integration process of senior citizens through exchange of accomplishments and information as well as skills and experience in the field of culture and cultural heritage
  • To stimulate active life of senior citizens in order to increase their participation in events organized by cultural institutions (exhibitions, meetings, seminars)

Ad.2

Major goals:

  • To provide the senior citizens access to ICT
  • To disseminate of the knowledge on computers in the senior citizens group
  • To increase the activity
  • To improve the inter-generation dialogue

We have computer courses for beginners and  advanced with  10 people  and  2 teachers

For advanced courses  : searching internet, searching book lending system, scanner, training and lectures about banking systems

Students are meeting once a week when the  library is open.

Ad.3

Objective:

To stimulate civil activity of senior citizens directed towards representing of the peers interest against public authorities through:

  • Expressing the needs of the senior citizens
  • Participation in decision-making processes
  • Monitoring the situation of senior citizens

All courses are taking place in the library, which is also a good place to make cross-generation meetings talking about  books.

Germany

Two main activities :

  1. course computers :

*     for seniors without experience

most are more than 60 years old

Lessons are 5 afternoons, each  3 times 45 minutes

The maximum number is  10 people in group.

Each one  has his own working place

It costs 6 euros per afternoon, which is  cheap

The courses are one specific  day  in the  week but people have free access on other days.

*     For advanced level :

work processing  and  formatting for people who already know  basics or learned 1rst course

4 afternoons  twice a week (so 2 week as a whole )  - free 6 euros

seniors help each other

possibility to train free on other days

*     Other course more internet oriented – not only seniors

internet basic search

preparing holidays = complete task

safety in using internet

working with links

using emails and having address

As people  see their  children only once a year, the internet connection is very important

This is a morning course with up to 12 participants, working in groups, 5 mornings

There is a special fee for seniors

They also learn :

-         create greeting cards with word-arts (for Christmas, etc..)

-         first steps to create a homepage with Frontpage for “Café mit Anschluss”

Later on, they might continue with internet site creation

  1. Meetings “Café mit Anschluss” offer activities/conferences without computer

The latest activity has been to collect recipes from different countries (people are from different origins) and  printing out a booklet.

other offers without computers :

-using GPS, mobile phones, health courses

-guided visits: schools, factories...

- in June : daily tour to Leipzig to visit the Zoo, the town, sites linked to Schiller and Goethe history

-  working together with library staff : library visits

Finland

During the first year of the project we have had three kinds of courses, cellular phones, elementary use of computers and internet banking. These have been conducted by two voluntary workers with the help of students. The problems is how to advertise of the possibility to join the project as there is not money for general costs. We have used leaflets in the libraries and once a subsided advertisement in the local paper. One article in a local paper has also brought publicity.

Wellness-TVfor seniors  presented later in these minutes is also a part of our project.

*     courses  about mobile telephone

Each course is  4 hours, as participant prefer them to longer programs. Participants pay 5 euros pro course to cover the cost of facilities.

Teachers: 2 voluntary workers and   1-2 students from to near by technical University Laurea.

Problem :Most telephones are too small, some to the participant have problems in memorizing/learning.

By now we have had  4 basic course for those who are real new-beginners

and an advanced course  which  continues basic course  and where other features are taught like

  • calendar
  • radio
  • wireless lan
  • camera
  •

It is impossible to go through  all features,  because telephones are too different  and nowadays as complicated  as computers, but the main aim is to make the users confident with the basic functions and their ability to learn more. This is very important as in Finland  for everybody to have a cellular phone.

*     course about internet banking

There are less and less bank agencies so internet banking becomes more important.

There was a course given by two bank employees  but they have their  jargon and proceed too fast. Expert are anyway useful, but the voluntary workers have to help the participants in practicing the new skills. In the future selecting participants must be more effective ie. only those who have computers at home and are at least somewhat familiar with them, can take this type of courses.

*     Courses how use computers

There are many courses for people to learn to use computers, but they are not suitable for old ones who need more individual tuition.

The residents in Foibe are rather old and their condition is not good. This means that most of the participants until present have come from outside. Even if the fee (5 euros) is low, many feel that they cannot afford it.

There is a problem of how to publicize in the area about courses

Czech republic

The lessons are individual lessons about basics of computers as young people are going to seniors’ homes (people over 50)  to teach them. The idea is also to connect 2 worlds : young and old, which seems to be a good idea for both.

Each senior have his own teacher so the relationship gets strong and students get part of family

Students get advice from their teachers how to do the course

The important is : slow pace teaching

Other planned activities :

  • language courses for seniors
  • don't worry if you are more than 50

Presentation of Laurea Technical University: Special project for seniors "Wellness TV"

This is a project of interactive personalized  TV  for  seniors

With :

-         Laurea University of Applied Siences, Tikkurila Unit

-         Foibe Diakoniasäätiö witch offers in Palvelukeskus Foibe (Foibe Service Center) apartments, services and activities mainly for the elderly people.

-         Videra Ltd  who provides the technological platform ( http://www.videra.com/videra.htm)

This project was set up with and for young students  learning social services and healthcare providing them a new way of applied studies in a new technological environment.

The group of elderly people was of 11 persons. The students make programs for elderly people. About health, counseling, healthy food, services, music, etc. They make program in function of the needs and demands of the seniors for as much as once a week from February to may 2008.

Programs can include conferences (web conferencing), music audition, games ( such as everybody says a sentence and the group sets up a whole story -  creating a group story), group gymnastics.

There are some but few technical problems (sound should be better).

One can also think of having it on the TV screen of a person  in her room, having , in the morning, somebody greetings ( saying : Good morning!!)  on the screen.

The TV is in closed network so no security problems
