Topic: How to successfully use the Google Search

Lesson Length:  90 minutes

Notes: 

Seniors 55+

Task/Objectives:

The objective is to use not only the normal “Google Search” but also the features of the “Advanced Search”. For example: using Google as calculator, weather forecast, translator etc.

Description of Activity/Activities

 

a) The lesson started with a brief introduction in the interface of the “Google Main Site” and the “Results Site”.

b) Trying to find a very difficult/specific expression without any special codes. Result was not satisfying.

c) More successful search with additional codes like “+” or “-“

d) Explanation and proper use of the main codes to specify the search (+, -, *, ~ and “…”)

e) Explanation and proper use of the whole bunch of features, like:

- weather forecast

- calculator (i.e. km in miles or curreny converter, too)

- special definitions of words

- spell check

- local search (i.e. restaurants)

- local cinema programme and

- Google Maps

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Verification (steps to check for student understanding):

 

After several explanations the seniors tried the new methods on their own and the teacher could look over their shoulders. There was not any claim.

Resources:

 

Because of the calm and professional atmosphere the seniors were able to write down note independently and to use Google to find the same results again.
