Topic: 

1. Computer Basics

 

Lesson Lenght:

1 lesson = 90 minutes

   4 meetings x 90 min (once a week)

 

 

Notes:

6 seniors; aged: >55

 

Task/Objectives:

                       Basic Computer Operation:

 

Trainings are aimed at familiarizing senior citizens having no knowledge on computers with basic computer-related skills: hardware, software, dealing with text editors, copying and saving the files and documents

 

Description of Activity/Activities

 

Content of trainings:

1. Brief introduction in computer hardware

2. How to deal with computer: basics (i.e.: turning on/out; mouse using; opening the software; using the window)

3. MS Windows system

4. Text editor MS Word (writing, font formatting, text formatting on the page, page formatting, printing)

5. Saving files and documents

6. Printing

 

In all types of activities, the trainers are usually young people and during trainings and/or meetings inter-generation dialogue occurs as natural phenomenon.

 

 Courses are for 6 seniors, once a week when the library is open.

Trainings are carried out  n friendly and nice atmosphere. Computer games are used as educating tools. Practical skills are emphasized. The technical jargon is as much as possible avoided.

Each participant is equipped with course materials and obtains at the end of course an appropriate certificate.

Since some participants exhibit are inaudible, the a special sound system is applied.

 

Courses are free of charge.

 

Courses are coordinated by Regional Centre for Social Integration of Regional Public Library in Krakow.

 

 

Verification (steps to check for student understanding):         

 

Individual approach is applied. The pace of training is adjusted to the group capability. All queries are dealt as they arise. Always after theoretical introduction, practical part takes place. Homework is distributed among the participants. At the end of the course the anonymous evaluation and test are carried out. They help in modifying the curriculum of the subsequent courses.

  • Almost all the participants exhibit interest in attending the more advanced courses.
  • Outstanding cooperation and communication is observed between trainers (young people) and training participants (senior citizens).
  • Courses strongly indicate that contrary to the popular opinion only peers are efficient as teachers/trainers of senior citizens.
